Total Spending on Healthcare in North America

The chart below shows the total spending on healthcare in 2010 according to data compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO). This chart gives you an idea of how much the United States, Canada, Mexico and other countries in North America spend annually on healthcare for its citizens, and the rate of growth during the last five years. As you can see, the US spends dramatically more per person than any other country in North America, or the world. The USA spends nearly 14 times as much per person as Mexico. Interestingly the rate of growth in healthcare spending in the US has been nominal from 2005 to 2010 at 30% when compared to other countries such as China, Brazil and India. However, because the US spends more than US$8,300 per person on healthcare, even a 10% increase ($830) dwarfs what is being spent now per person in those high growth countries. Like Europe, the US will likely focus on cost containment and improved medical outcomes to maintain affordability of healthcare.
